WIP Culln basecoat

Today we have put some base colour on to Commander Culln.

This base colour will serve as a mid tone for the project then we will have a couple of shadow tones and a couple of lighter highlight tone to bring up the contrast.

The customer requested us the NMM ( non-metallic metal) style on the mini so we have given the model a mid brown basecoat for the gold area( which will get shaded down to black) and the grey metal areas are givin a dark grey (50/50 mid grey and black) tone to start with.

The armour was given a grey black and brown mix to add extra tones to the final stages. A Crimson tone for example GW Red gore was painted onto the red areas.

Face was a flat flesh tone such as Gw Bugmans glow as this flesh tone is fairly red and shades very well with other colours.

The areas to be white are give a blue grey coat first (white is fairly complexs to paint but we will go into that at a further stage).

The paper areas are painted a dark brown to give an aged and worn look.

Don't worry at this point if things are looking a little bloachy or if white is showing for when we get to shading and highlighting stages these will smoothout and disappear.  This stage was painted with a medium brush ( GW standard or size 1 artists brush).

To compare with Forgeworlds' artst below we are aiming to add more contrast and shading so that the characters mini stands out from their army.

Afraid of adding more contrast?

At a recent gaming weekend the discussion of contrast and taking things up a notch came up.  Many painters are afraid to bring the contrast up on their minis as it may over saturate the mini as a whole but we thought we would post something we saw in one of our favourite online forums Platoon Britannica (PB). This is a before and after from Emuse studios and shows the difference more contrast can make to your minis.

This is alot a good example of NMM ( non-metallic metal) which we will also demonstrate with some of Works in Progress (WIP)

WIP Red Scorpion Grand Master

WIP RS Grand Master by Nomad Paint Studio
WIP RS Grand Master, a photo by Nomad Paint Studio on Flickr.
Today we began work on Forge world's Commander Culln. First thing to note is that the model is made of resin and comes unassembled.

First thing then is to clean up the model ( the process of removing moldlines, flash and to use modelling putty to filly in gaps and holes that occasionally happen in the molding process ) We used a handy cheap multi-tool to speed things up as well as needle files, modelling knife and sand paper to do this.
Once the clean up was done on all the parts we gave them a wash in lukewarm soapy water to remove the release agent. The release agent is a type of grease which is placed on the mould so the the moulded model will not stick to it the downside is that if the agent is not remove the paint will not attach properly to the model , so this is a must if using resin.

Next we part assembled the model using superglue if it is a large heavy of resin or metal model we would suggest pinning as this will help the model to support the weight of the larger parts when gluing the parts together. We checked that the parts assembled will not interfere with the brush when painting and if they did as set aside to be painted separately before glueing to the model.

Now we primed the model. We sprayed the model with GW black primer so that we have a solid black coat, remember to spray in small bursts from about 30 cm or 12 inches away. Then we gave a light dusting for GW skull white spray then built up on a area of the model that we will paint the light direction from as this will make things easier when painting.

Thanks for reading!

This finished 28mm Big Mek from Games Workshop was painted for the studio's Ork army( character standard ) and was very effective on our gaming weekend on our city fight scenery.

Another Project on the bench is this 28mm Boromir of the White Tower from Games Workshop. This Mini is being painted as well as another on horse to lead the Studio's 'War of the ring' army. He should stand out very well against the backdrop of the army as they are all predominately painted with white and metal colours.

WIP Chaos Warrior

Chaos Warrior Aug2012 by Nomad Paint Studio
Our chaos warrior is coming along nicely. We will be using a strong gold for the helm as this will contrast greatly with the purple armour. Unsure of the fur at the moment but we will probably keep it dark to allow the helm to stand out just a little bit more
